PEDIATRIC STATS

  • Learning disabilities affect approximately 5% of school-age children
  • Developmental delays occur in 5 – 10% of all children
  • Estimated lifetime prevalence of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is 10.2% (11.2% for males, 9.2% for females)
  • Currently in the US there are 8 million children being treated with psychiatric drugs
  • Children born to women who are low in vitamin D have an increased incidence of allergies, and severity of asthma, and increased incidence of Type I diabetes
  • An increased incidence of autism has been identified in children born by both emergency and elective Cesarean section
  • An almost a 2- fold increase in ADHD diagnosis was found in children born to mothers who were induced during labor
  • The World Health Organization recommends that babies be exclusively breastfed for 6 months, and to continue breastfeeding for up to 2 years of age
  • Breastfed babies have been shown to have higher IQs and cognitive development, and a lower incidence of Type 1 diabetes, allergies (when compared with cow’s milk and soy formulas), asthma, and ear infections
  • The brain has an abundant fat content that is 70% cholesterol
  • Children with low total cholesterol concentrations (below the 25th percentile) were almost 3 times more likely to have been suspended or expelled from schools
  • The brain is not fully developed until about 25 years of age
  • The blood-brain barrier which protects the brain from toxic substances, is not fully formed until about 6 months of age
  • Adults absorb 10-15% of ingested lead, children and pregnant women can absorb up to 50%
  • Higher blood levels of lead are correlated with lower IQ in kids
  • Prenatal BPA exposure has been linked to aggression in 2 year olds, as well as anxiety, depression, and poor emotional control in girls
  • Infants aged 2 – 3 months accumulate 11 times more bisphenol A  in their bodies than adults
  • More than 80,000 chemicals have been produced in last century, 20 are known toxic, 1000 are suspected toxic, the remainder have unknown effects
  • Dental amalgams known as “silver” fillings contain 50% metallic mercury, 35% silver, 9% tin, and 6% copper by weight
  • Studies found a 15 times increase in breath mercury after chewing in subjects with silver amalgams, and 80% of the dental mercury released was absorbed by the body
  • A greater number of behavior problems, temper tantrums, and sleep problems were reported in children with lower total omega-3 fatty acid concentrations
  • More learning and health problems were found in pediatric subjects with lower total omega-3 fatty acid concentrations
  • By decreasing fats & sugars and increasing fruits, vegetables & whole grains in children’s diets, one study found a 47% decrease in antisocial behavior, a 40% decrease in learning disabilities, and a 16% increase in academic performance
